Calif. - Canesta, a developer of
3D image sensors, announced on Wednesday that it has raised $16 million in new
financing, from returning backers Carlyle Growth Partners, Hotung Venture Group
and Venrock, and new investors Quanta Computer and SMSC.
Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Canesta's 3D camera chips provide a real-time, 3D "depth map" of the surrounding area to PCs, and consumer electronics like televisions, video games and smartphones. The technology can be used for hands-free gesture control, facial recognition, avatar control in virtual worlds and other augmented reality applications. Canesta will use the funds for business expansion and working capital.
