Nickelodeon Buys Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for $60MAuthored by Mark Hefflinger on October 21, 2009 - 8:20am.
New York
- Viacom's (NYSE: VIA) Nickelodeon children's TV network announced on Wednesday that it has
acquired the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) franchise from creators The
Mirage Group for $60 million.
Roughly $11 million of that sum will go to 4Kids Entertainment, which had been the merchandising licensing agent for the franchise; that contract, scheduled to expire in 2012, has been terminated. The deal comes in the franchise's 25th anniversary year. Viacom's Paramount Pictures is currently working on a new TMNT film, while Nickelodeon plans to debut a new animated TV series in 2012. Existing episodes of the TV series will continue to air on the CW Network through the end of the 2009-2010 broadcast season.
