Los Gatos,
Calif. - Online DVD rental
service Netflix (NASD: NFLX) announced on Monday that it will extend its on-demand movie and
TV episode streaming service to Sony's (NYSE: SNE) PlayStation 3 game console platform, expanding
beyond a previously exclusive deal with Microsoft's Xbox 360.
Netflix members in the U.S. will be able to access the streaming feature on their PlayStation 3 consoles at no extra cost beginning next month. The feature will initially be enabled via a free, instant streaming Blu-ray disc, compatible with the PlayStation 3, that will be made available to all Netflix members. Netflix currently counts around 11.1 million U.S. subscribers, while the PlayStation 3 U.S. installed base is nearly 9 million.
