Google Offers Turn-by-Turn GPS Directions for Android PhonesAuthored by Mark Hefflinger on October 28, 2009 - 10:49am.
Mountain View,
Calif. - Google (NASD: GOOG) on Wednesday
announced the release of Google Maps Navigation for Android mobile phones, an
update to its popular mapping application that provides turn-by-turn
directions, as well as voice-powered search and other features.
The free service will initially be available in the U.S., on the new Droid smartphone from Verizon. Google Maps Navigation brings GPS-powered turn-by-turn directions to Google Maps for the first time. The service also offers features such as searching in "plain English" search strings -- meaning one doesn't have to know a location's exact address -- as well as voice-powered search; traffic view; satellite view; and street view.
