San Diego - Google (NASD: GOOG) has paid about $30 million in cash to acquire Gizmo5, a developer of Internet telephony technology, TechCrunch reported, citing multiple sources with knowledge of the deal.

San Diego-based Gizmo5 was founded in 2003 by Michael Robertson, the digital music pioneer who launched MP3.com.

The company has to date raised $6 million in outside venture capital.

TechCrunch reports that Gizmo5 was previously also in talks to be acquired by Skype, but that last week's settlement of litigation between parties looking to acquire Skype from eBay left Gizmo5 the odd man out.
