Redwood City, Calif. - Video game developer and publisher Electronic Arts (NASD: ERTS) yesterday announced that it would lay off 17% of its workforce, or about 1,500 employees, in a bid to cut costs by about $100 million a year.

The new cuts include 900 developers, 500 in game publishing, and 100 corporate positions.

Earlier this year, EA laid off some 1,100 employees as part of a restructuring.

The company said during its restructuring it would be focusing on its hit game titles, and expanding its digital distribution.

Speaking of poor game sales...

I mentioned yesterday how no new games were holding my attention, but the only game that actively annoyed me was from EA. They've gone overboard with EULAs and downloaders and anti-piracy measures. When I installed WH it ended up putting a bunch of useless programs in the background, and uninstalling was a huge pain. So while I feel for the people losing jobs, I hope EA realizes that its their own policies that are to blame when I actively go out of my way to avoid their future titles. I'm looking for entertainment, not a technical and legal run-around.
