New York - Motorola (NYSE: MOT) sold an estimated 100,000 of its new Droid smartphones over the weekend, Broadpoint AmTech analyst Mark McKechnie told Bloomberg.

Carrier partner Verizon (NYSE: VZ) had 200,000 handsets in stock for the Droid launch on Nov. 6, and most stores had sold at least half of their supply, McKechnie told Bloomberg.

By comparison, Apple's 3GS sold over 1 million units during its weekend launch in June.

The Google Android-based Droid is currently selling for $199 with a $100 rebate and two-year contract.
