Santa Monica, Calif. - Video game publisher Activision (NASD: ATVI), a unit of Vivendi, announced on Thursday that its anticipated "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2" game racked up an estimated $310 million in first-day sales across North America and the U.K. Activision said the game received a record number of pre-orders before its official release on Tuesday, when over 10,000 U.S. retail outlets stayed open until midnight to sell the title.

First-day unit sales were approximately 4.7 million in North America and the U.K.

"The Call of Duty franchise has become a cultural phenomenon showing the power of video games as an entertainment medium," said Activision Publishing CEO Mike Griffith.

"The shattering of these entertainment records is a testament to the compelling, cinematic and uniquely engaging experience that the Call of Duty brand delivers."
