Research Triangle Park, N.C. – Zenph Sound Innovations, a developer of musical analysis technology, announced on Friday that it has raised $10.7 million in its first round of financing, led by Intersouth Partners.
Capitol Broadcasting Company of Raleigh also participated in the round, proceeds from which will be used to refine the company’s business model, and to continue product development.
Founded in 2002, North Carolina-based Zenph says its technology "turns audio recordings into data sets," capturing "musical nuance, with details about musicians’ note choice, volume, touch and articulations in micro-second timings."
"With this data, a virtual artist can play re-performances, precisely replicating a musician’s playing in an original recording."
Zenph’s technology was used earlier this month to "re-perform" a live recital by pianist Sergei Rachmaninoff at Carnegie Hall in New York.

I attended a private demonstration of this technology. When you closed your eyes, it was as if Rachmaninoff were playing live in the room, on a beautiful 1909 Steinway. Truly wonderous.
