Washington - The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday voted unanimously to approve President Barack Obama's nomination for the newly-created position of copyright czar, Victoria Espinel.

Espinel has served as an advisor on intellectual property issues to the staff of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Senate Finance Committee, House Judiciary Committee and House Ways and Means Committee.

Her appointment was lauded by groups in favor of both more restrictive, and looser copyright laws.

Espinel's nomination will now go before the full Senate for a vote.

If approved, she will be tasked with overseeing the nation's enforcement of intellectual property laws, and with representing U.S. interested in such matters abroad.
