Washington - The U.S. Senate late on Thursday confirmed Victoria Espinel as the nation's first Intellectual Property Enforcement Coordinator, or "copyright czar," who will be tasked with overseeing the nation's enforcement of copyright-related laws, and representing U.S. intellectual property interests abroad.

The position was created by the PRO-IP Act, which was signed into law in 2008.

Previously, Espinel served as an advisor on intellectual property issues to the staff of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Senate Finance Committee, House Judiciary Committee and House Ways and Means Committee.

Her confirmation was hailed by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and National Music Publishers Association.
