New York - Total U.S. ad spending fell by 14.7% in the first three quarters of 2009 from the same period a year ago, while third-quarter spending was down 15.3%, marking the sixth consecutive quarter of year-over-year declines, according to a report from market research firm TNS Media Intelligence.

The biggest bright spot for the U.S. ad industry was Internet display, which showed a 7% increase during the first nine months of the year.

Cable TV ad spending slipped by 2.9%, while network TV ad spending fell 11.5%, and precipitous declines were seen at magazines (down 19.7%); newspapers ( down 22.8%); and radio (down 22.8%).

TNS did note that declines for the third quarter were less severe than those seen in the first half of the year.
