Report: MySpace in Talks to Buy Film Social Net FlixsterAuthored by Mark Hefflinger on December 15, 2009 - 10:04am.
New York
- Fresh off of its recent acquisitions of music services iLike and imeem, News
Corp.'s (NYSE: NWS) MySpace is reportedly in talks to acquire movie-focused social media
site Flixster, according to All Things D, which cited several unnamed sources.
The plan would be to combine Flixster with Rotten Tomatoes, the film reviews aggregator operated by News Corp.'s IGN. Founded in 2006, San Francisco-based Flixster counts some 50 million users of its service, and claims the top movie-related application for Apple's iPhone. The company has raised $7 million to date, from backers including Lightspeed Venture Partners, Pinnacle Ventures and Reid Hoffman. Sources told All Things D that a deal "is not immediately imminent, but that MySpace has been conducting extensive due diligence" on Flixster.
