New York - CBS (NYSE: CBS) and Disney (NYSE: DIS) are in talks to participate in Apple's (NASD: AAPL) plan to offer an online television subscription service, people familiar with the matter told The Wall Street Journal. Apple is looking to complete deals and launch the service in 2010, although no announcements have yet been made of any network partners. The Journal's sources say News Corp. (NYSE: NWS), Viacom (NYSE: VIA), Turner (NYSE: TWX) and Discovery (NASD: DISCA) "appear to be opposed to or leaning away from signing on, at least to Apple's initial proposals."

Apple's proposals reportedly include a payment of $2 to $4 a month per subscriber to a broadcast network, and $1 to $2 per month per subscriber to basic cable networks; an initial version also proposed a "best of television" package that would cost consumers $30 per month.

The Journal noted that Apple recently acquired music streaming service Lala, and sources speculate that the service will be integrated into the iTunes Store to complement the song downloads sold there.

A subscription TV service addition to a revamped iTunes Store could also help the market for Apple's forthcoming multimedia tablet PC, which sources told The Journal is expected to be released in March.
