Palo Alto, Calif. — Facebook announced today during a live press conference on their Facebook Live page that they have partnered with Skype to offer video calling.

CEO Mark Zuckerburg spoke about the social infrastructure that has been established over the last five years, including the “exponential growth” of sharing.

“Sharing is growing at a fast exponential rate — twice the amount of stuff the world would have shared this day a year ago,” said Zuckerberg.

Officially announcing that Facebook has reached over 750 million users a day, Zuckerberg noted that the company has been building new features over the past six months to match the amount of users sharing and actively using the social networking website.

Not only will Facebook users be able to have group chats, but the company will also be introducing a new chat design.

The biggest announcement, however, came when Zuckerberg announced Facebook’s partnership with Skype to bring video calling to their platform, calling Facebook “one if not the biggest chat networks in the world.”

“A few months ago, we started working with Skype to bring video calling to Facebook,” said Phillip Su, a Facebook engineer working on the video calling team, in a post to Facebook’s official blog. “We built it right into chat, so all your conversations start from the same place.”

The features will be available to Facebook users starting Wednesday, although the company will still be working on the features to makes sure they are running smoothly.
