It’s a mystery precisely what Grokr will do, but well-known entrepreneur Srivats Sampath has raised $1.5 million to do it. He’s also the chief executive officer and president of the company, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Sampath is currently an executive-in-residence at U.S. Venture Partners, where among his interests is what he refers to as the cognitive web: “the role of human cognition and eye movement in improving the efficiency of web search, advertising, and applications.”

That could be a clue to Grokr, since the company’s placeholder site promises it will be “unleashing the cognitive Web for a post-PC world” in February.

Sampath is perhaps best known as the founder, president and chief executive officer of McAfee.com, which is now McAfee Inc. following a successful IPO and a 2002 merger with Network Associates.

More recently he was co-founder, president and chief executive officer of Mercora, the parent company of social music network Social.FM that folded in 2008. Users could search for and stream songs as well as create their own profile page and webcast to other users of the free service.

Sampath’s other achievements include being founder, president and chief executive officer of email-based groupware solutions firm Discussions Corporations, vice president of product marketing at Netscape Communications, co-founding healthcare software company Mecon, and filling executive roles at Central Point Software and Intel’s LAN Enhancement Operations.
