NBC tonight debuts Hidden Planet, a monthly documentary series that can be seen exclusively on iPad before being posted at RockCenterNBC.com a week later.

The show is hosted by NBC News chief foreign correspondent Richard Engel, and each episode will premiere on the Rock Center with Brian Williams app. This is the first time the network has tried this method of distribution.

“Since Rock Center launched last fall, we’ve seen that our audience is both watching the broadcast on-air and viewing our stories online and via mobile devices,” said Rock Center with Brian Williams executive producer Rome Hartman.

Engel’s Hidden Planet journeys to rarely seen locations around the globe, including awe-inspiring places like the Lost City of Timbuktu and the tunnels beneath the Giza Pyramids.
