We at Digital Media Wire would like to wish you a happy Pi Day, and to share with you our appreciation of π, the irrational number that results from dividing the circumference of a circle by its diameter.
The event, which recognizes the beauty of 3.14 on March 14, is 24 years old today.
Established at San Francisco’s Exploratorium by its in-house “Prince of Pi,” physicist Larry Shaw, Pi Day has become an international holiday, celebrated live and online all around the world.
Among its other observations, the Exploratorium is holding a Pi Day party in Second Life. All visitors are invited to drop by the new Pi-arama Space dome to join the celebrations, which include gliding around the virtual world on limited edition “pie” hover discs. Shaw also is participating in a webcast to explain what’s so special about pi, how it is calculated. The half-hour includes limericks and a demo the Exploratorium promises is “cool.”
