John McAfee, a pioneer in creating antivirus software, is “a person of interest” in the murder of fellow American expatriate and Belize resident Gregory Faull.
The news was first reported by Gizmodo, which subsequently obtained a statement from Belize police. McAfee later phoned Wired magazine to share his side of the story and to contend that the Belize government was conducting a vendetta against him that put him in fear for his life.
McAfee is known to Belize authorities both for his donations to the community and for recent incidents like a drugs raid that turned up a small cache of firearms in McAfee’s home on the island of Ambergris Caye. All charges were dropped in that case.
McAfee’s fortune was estimated at $100 million following the sale of the company that still bears his name, although multiple reports say it has fallen considerably since then.
