Instagram outdoes itself on Thanksgiving
/ November 24, 2012 11:44 pm

Instagram celebrated something new to be grateful for on Thanksgiving, when the social photo service experienced the busiest day in the two years of its existence. The number of Instagram-shared photos on Thanksgiving Day was double that of the previous day, and more than 10 million of those images mentioned something about the holiday in their captions.

Instagram said that several hours during the day it experienced over 200 photos posted every second. Check out the chart below to see what the traffic pattern looked like.

For comparison, this volume of photos claimed the crown from previous record-holder Hurricane Sandy, which accounted for 800,000 photos and averaged 10 photos per second. But that’s hardly a fair comparison, since thousands of people had much more important things to do during the storm than taking photos.
