San Francisco – Wikia, the San Francisco-based developer of a collaboratively published media platform, said on Friday it has raised $10 million in its third round of funding.
Institutional Venture Partners led the round, which also included participation from previous backers Bessemer Ventures Partners and Amazon.com.
Wikia was founded in 2006 by Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales and former Wikipedia board member Angela Beesley; Wales serves as chair of Wikia’s board.
The company allows users to form new communities around any subject or participate in over 250,000 existing communities. Wikia, which reports being profitable, said it will use the proceeds to further accelerate its mobile and video initiatives, drive continued community and user growth and evaluate possible acquisitions.
The company has now raised $25 million since its inception in 2006.
