San Francisco – Plivo, the San Francisco-based developer of a voice and messaging app platform, said on Monday it has raised $1.75 million in a round of seed funding from Andreessen Horowitz, Battery Ventures, Qualcomm and SV Angel.

The company said it will use the capital for product development, sales and marketing.

Launched in December, Plivo offers a hosted environment for voice and messaging apps, and allows clients to build apps that better integrate the web with telephony. The company now plans to expand its platform into areas such as video and WebRTC, which will enable applications such as voice calls and video chat without plugins.

“What Amazon did for web hosting in the cloud, Plivo is doing for telephony hosting,” said co-founder Venky Balasubramanian.

The company currently has 17 employees, and plans to increase that number to more than 20 by year’s end.

“We are very excited about our investment in Plivo,” said Roger Lee, general partner at Battery Ventures. “Hosted telephony is poised to explode as more companies move their applications to the cloud. Plivo’s technology delivers incredible value to enterprise customers and has the potential to seriously disrupt the space. We’re proud to partner with the management team and support the company to help drive growth and capture the opportunity ahead.”
