Yahoo and the NBC Sports Group today announced a broad alliance that calls for them to collaborate on integrated content, promotions and advertising.
Under terms of the agrement, which had been expected, the partners will maintain separate sites and editorial control of their respective newsrooms and digital properties. But they will work together on premium sports news and events regardless of platform.
Two very popular elements are included in the plans. Yahoo Sports will host the live stream of Sunday Night Football during the NFL regular season, via NBC Sports’ player, and Yahoo Sports will become the exclusive fantasy game provider of NBC Sports’ fantasy news and information site Rotoworld, which features football, baseball, hockey, soccer, College Bowl Pick’em and Tourney Pick’em.
NBC Sports Regional Networks will be Yahoo Sports’ preferred content provider and reciprocally will integrate team pages, fantasy experts and sports talent from Yahoo.
Yahoo Sports and NBC Sports also will jointly develop original programs that will appear on both Yahoo Sports and NBCSports.com. Among other shows, sports fans can expect to see video news interviews and editorial from Bob Costas; video segments during the NFL season from Football Night in America’s Tony Dungy and Rodney Harrison; and Pro Football Talk Live, an every-weekday show from ProFootballTalk’s Mike Florio.
Advertising and sponsorships are obviously part of the mix and can now be set across Yahoo Sports, the Rivals Network, NBCSports.com, NBC Sports Regional Networks, Golf Channel.com, Rotoworld.com and Allisports.com.
Each partner issued an executive statement.
Ken Fuchs, vice president of Yahoo Global Media and head of Yahoo Sports and Games: “Passionate fans need news and analysis about their favorite teams in real time, and they want access to that information no matter where they are. We’re thrilled to combine Yahoo’s fantasy offerings, product innovation and editorial authority with NBC’s broadcast coverage of live sports events and award-winning on-air talent. We think our users will love the result.”
Mark Lazarus, chairman, NBC Sports Group: “The complementary nature of this partnership is unmatched in digital sports media. Through our growing television and digital platforms, the Yahoo Sports partnership dramatically expands the digital reach of NBC Sports around the biggest sporting events. We are committed to continually growing this alliance for the benefit of both parties, our sports-property partners, and, most importantly, sports fans.”
