Nintendo announced today that its Wii U has sold more than 890,000 units with sales of more than $300 million in the U.S. since its release in November 2012.  The original Wii generated $270 million during the same time period.

“While the Wii launch established new benchmarks in the United States, Wii U has surpassed its predecessor in perhaps the most important category: revenue generation,” said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing.

However, what Nintendo did not include in its announcement was that the original Wii sold for $250, while the basic Wii U starts at $300.  With that in mind, GameStop estimates that if Nintendo had placed the Wii U on a level playing ground at a selling price of $250, its actual revenue would be around $222 million.
