Reuters: China May End 13-year Ban on Video Game Consoles

Reuters reports that China is planning to lift its decade long ban on video game consoles as reported by the official China Daily newspaper. The news has caused a surge in the price of shares of the big console makers Sony Corp and Nintendo Co Ltd. The China Daily cited an unnamed source from the Ministry of Culture as saying, “We are reviewing the policy and have conducted some surveys and held discussions with other ministries on the possibility of opening up the game console market. However, since the ban was issued by seven ministries more than a decade ago, we will need approval from all parties to lift it.” In November, Sony’s PlayStation 3 was given a quality certification from a Chinese safety standards body, giving rise to rumors that Beijing would most likely lift the ban. The ban was imposed in 2000 to protect children’s physical and mental growth.  Read more
