Apple Plans to Buy Japanese Chipmaker’s Smartphone Display Unit

appleiphone5cVentureBeat reports that Apple is planning to acquire a smartphone display design division of Japanese chipmaker Renesas. Specifically, Apple is looking to acquire the Renesas stake in Renesas SP Drivers, a joint venture with Taiwan’s Powerchip and Sharp. The deal will provide Apple with more resources to increase shelf life of batteries and provide sharper display images. The company is already focusing on this market with its signature retina display technology for tablets and smartphones. Controller chips and display drivers are keys to better performance, quality, and power efficiency. It is speculated that Apple might acquire Sharp’s ownership as well, if it succeeds in acquiring the Renesas stake. Read More
