Discovery Acquires Controlling Stake in Eurosport International

Discovery Communications, the Silver Spring-based media company behind such cable TV staples as the Discovery Channel, TLC and Animal Planet, said on Friday it has acquired a controlling interest in European sports entertainment group Eurosport International. The company, which initially acquired a 20% stake in Eurosport in 2012, increased its stake to 51% as part of a larger partnership with TF1 Group. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Apple to Acquire Dr. Dre’s Beats Electronics for $3 Billion

Further bolstering its music offerings, Apple late Wednesday said it will pay $3 billion to acquire Dr. Dre's Beats Electronics, the developer of a subscription streaming music service and maker of popular headphones, speakers and audio software. Under the deal, expected to close by the end of September, the company will make an initial payment of $2.6 billion, plus another $400 million that will vest over time. As part of the acquisition, co-founders Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre will join Apple in unspecified roles. Read More

App Annie Raises $17 Million, Acquires Distimo

App Annie, a San Francisco-based developer of an app analytics and market data platform, said on Wednesday it has raised $17 million in a new round of funding and acquired Netherlands-based mobile analytics company Distimo. Previous backers IDG Capital Partners, Greycroft Partners and Sequoia Capital took part in the round, which increases the company's total funding to $39 million. Read More

Gannett, the McLean-based media giant behind USA Today, said on Tuesday it has acquired DC-based HotelMe, a website providing authenticated user-generated hotel reviews. Launched in 2012 as a joint venture between Gannett, USA Today Travel Media Group and District Hospitality Partners, HotelMe is a site that verifies whether writers actually stayed at the properties they reviewed, theoretically eliminating fake reviews.
