Netflix to Pay Comcast to Ensure Smooth Streaming

The LA Times reports that Netflix has entered an agreement with Comcast to pay the Internet provider to ensure that Netflix's movies and TV shows stream seamlessly. The agreement between the leading online video service in the U.S. and the largest provider of home Internet access in the U.S. is designed to ensure that Netflix subscribers can watch content free of the pauses and hiccups subscribers have reported in recent months and may pave the way for similar arrangements between Netflix and other Internet service providers. Chinese Box Office Surges 27% to $3.6 Billion in 2013

The LA Times reports that China's box office for movies reached $3.6 billion in 2013, up about 27% over 2012, lead by Chinese movies which drove down Hollywood's share of the market. L.A. Times in Joint Venture with U.S. Local News Network

Los Angeles – The Los Angeles Times Media Group said on Wednesday that it has formed a joint venture with U.S. Local News Network (USLNN), to create two local news sites aimed at readers in Orange County. The venture will see the companies share content and advertising across the two sites, TheOCNow.com and OCLNN.com, and Times-owned newspapers the Coastline Pilot, Daily Pilot and the Huntington Beach Independent. The companies have invested about $1 million in the venture, USLNN CEO Neil Senturia told the Times.

Tribune Folds Zap2It TV Listings Operations Into LATimes.com

Chicago - Publisher and broadcaster Tribune announced on Friday that it will combine the operations of its Zap2It entertainment listings service with the entertainment news division at its Los Angeles Times. Zap2It, which counts an audience of 4 million unique monthly visitors, will remain a standalone site. Leading the new operation will be LATimes.com entertainment editor Richard Rushfield and executive producer Joseph Kapsch. The combined operation is expected to draw a monthly online audience of 9 million unique visitors and 65 million page views.
