Facebook Debuts ‘Facebook Places’ Location Feature

Palo Alto, Calif. - Facebook on Thursday introduced a new location-based service, Facebook Places, which will let users of the social network "check-in" at real-world venues via their mobile phones. Facebook Places looks to capitalize on the growing popularity of similar services like Foursquare and Gowalla, and features offered by Yelp and others.

When Facebook users "check-in" at a venue, they can control whether it will show up as a story in friends’ News Feeds and in the Recent Activity section for that location.

Co-Founder Reportedly Stepping Down as CTO of Yelp

San Francisco - Russel Simmons, the co-founder of user-generated reviews site Yelp, will be stepping down as CTO, TechCrunch reported. Simmons, who in 2004 launched the company with fellow PayPal veteran Jeremy Stoppelman, reportedly plans to retain an advisory role as he takes some time off to travel. He also will continue to hold a "significant" stake in the company. No replacement has been named. Yelp draws about 32 million visitors a month to its 30 city sites, with contributors so far writing more than 11 million [...].

Yelp Integrates OpenTable for Restaurant Reservations

San Francisco - User-generated reviews publisher Yelp has announced a partnership with OpenTable, the provider of online restaurant reservation services. Under the terms, Yelp users will now be able to make restaurant reservations directly from Yelp review pages. At launch, the integration will cover some 11,000 restaurants in North America.
