Movie Studios Add Day-and-Date DVD Releases to iTunes Store

Cupertino, Calif. - Apple (NASD: AAPL) on Thursday announced that new release movies from the major Hollywood studios will now be made available for purchase and download from the iTunes Store on the same day as their DVD releases, and will be priced at $14.99. Participating studios include 20th Century Fox (NYSE: NWS), The Walt Disney Studios (NYSE: DIS), Warner Bros. (NYSE: TWX), Paramount Pictures (NYSE: VIA), Universal Studios Home Entertainment (NYSE: GE), Sony Pictures Entertainment (NYSE: SNE), Lionsgate, Image Entertainment and First Look Studios.

Los Angeles - News Corp.'s (NYSE: NWS) 20th Century Fox and Viacom's (NYSE: VIA) Paramount Pictures have joined Disney in the practice of offering films for purchase and download from Apple's (NASD: AAPL) iTunes Store on the same day they are released on DVD, with Fox adding "Juno" to the retailer's offering on Tuesday, Variety reported.

Hollywood - Video game developer Brash Entertainment on Tuesday shipped its "Jumper: Griffin's Story" title, based on the upcoming 20th Century Fox/Regency Enterprises film, to retailers. The game for Xbox 360, Wii and PlayStation 2 features the voice and likeness of Jamie Bell, the star from the film who is the subject of the game.

Los Angeles - Apple (NASD: AAPL) is close to making deals with most of the major movie studios that will see their films put up for sale at the company's iTunes Store, BusinessWeek reports. While the Financial Times previously reported that Apple had signed a deal with 20th Century Fox (NYSE: NWS) to offer downloadable movie rentals, sources told BusinessWeek that Apple is close to deals for rentals and/or sales with Warner Bros. (NYSE: TWX), Paramount (NYSE: VIA) and Lionsgate.

Sierra to Publish PSP-Exclusive Title for New "Aliens/Predator" Movie

Los Angeles - Vivendi's Sierra Entertainment game publishing label announced on Tuesday that it plans to publish a game based on the new Aliens/Predator film from 20th Century Fox exclusively for the Sony PSP handheld. The PSP game is being developed by Rebellion, which also created the "Aliens vs. Predator" PC game. The new film in the franchise is slated for release on Dec. 25.

It is being marketed as "ugly" and presented in "2D", according to the trailer embedded below. However, the marketing of the movie is certainly high-tech. Sir Howard Stringer, Chairman of the American Film Institute (AFI) Board of Trustees, today announced the unanimous selection of Bob Gazzale as new AFI President and CEO.  Gazzale, a film historian and multiple Emmy-nominated television producer and writer, has been a senior executive at AFI for 15 years. He will succeed Jean Picker Firstenberg, who announced she would retire at the end of AFI's 40th Anniversary celebration this fall.

The presidents of the six major movie studios' home entertainment divisions participated in a panel discussion at the DVD&Beyond Conference in Los Angeles on Monday. The topic was the state of the industry and their respective visions for the future. What struck me is that there was very little discussion of new growth opportunities, even though most of the studio executives on the panel recognized that their divisions were looking at flat or negative growth for 2007.

Report: Chinese Online Game Market to Grow to $2.1 Billion by 2010

Silicon Valley, Calif. - The Chinese online games market, which accounts for 84% of all gameplay among the country's estimated 27 million gamers, will grow from $683 million this year to $2.1 billion by 2010, according to Silicon Valley-based market research firm Niko Partners. Massively multiplayer titles are extremely popular, and 29% of the country's gamers play more than 60 hours per month, often at one of the country's 265,000 Internet cafes. Niko Partners also predicts strong growth for casual games, which are forecasted to account for 40% of the market by 2010. "Chinese gamers' passion for massively multiplayer online role-playing games has extended to the casual and premium casual segments. Premium casual games provide new gamers greater access to the online game market and open up an alternate source of entertainment for hardcore gamers," said Niko Partners managing partner Lisa Cosmas Hanson.

Report: Mobile Video Market to Reach $500 Million by 2010

New York - JupiterResearch, a New York-based business and technology market research firm, on Tuesday said that a new survey it conducted shows that 41% of mobile phone users "are interested in some form of video service on their mobile phone." While adoption of mobile video on phones has been somewhat low to date -- only 2% of respondents said they subscribed to such a service -- 17% said they were interested in watching "live" TV on their cell phones and 11% indicated interest in short video clips. Based on its survey results, JupiterResearch predicts that demand for video on mobile phones will generate $501 million in revenues by 2010, up from $62 million in 2005.

Report: Female Internet Users Up 63% Since 2003

London - According to a new report by the European Interactive Advertising Association (EIAA), the number of women using the Internet has increased by 63% since 2003. By comparison, the number of men using the Internet increased by 54% over the same period. What's more, online time for women between the ages of 16 and 24 has more than doubled over the last three years. The EIAA's Digital Women 2006 report went on to predict that women will be spending the most time online by the year 2007 if current trends continue.

Report: U.S. Angel Investments Grow at Modest Pace in 2005

Durham, N.H. - Angel investments in the U.S. grew modestly last year, rising 2.7% to $23.1 billion, according to new figures from the Center for Venture Research (CVR) at the University of New Hampshire. The largest chunk of those investments, about 20%, went to companies focused on healthcare services and medical devices, followed by those focused on software (18%) and biotech (12%). Jeffrey Sohl, the director of CVR, said that a growing number of angel investors are taking part in later-stage investments. Redwood City, Calif. - Electronic Arts announced on Wednesday that it will ship its "2006 FIFA World Cup" officially-licensed World Cup game in April 2006, before the tournament kicks off in Germany in June. The game was developed in Vancouver at EA Canada for Xbox 360, Xbox, PlayStation 2, PSP, GameCube, DS, Game Boy Advance and the PC; a mobile phone version will also be offered in English and Spanish-language editions.

Electronic Arts Slashes Some New Game Prices by 20%

Redwood City, Calif. - Video game publisher Electronic Arts announced on Wednesday that it plans to introduce a number of anticipated new titles at a 20% discount off the industry standard pricing for new games. EA's "Godfather" and "Black" will go on sale for PlayStation 2 and Xbox at $39.95, rather than the typical $49.95 price for new titles. A number of game publishers have taken similar steps to discount titles, both in light of flagging sales and in anticipation of the release of next-generation consoles. New games for Microsoft's new Xbox 360 console typically cost $59.95.

Struggling Video Game Publisher Atari to Cut 20% of Staff

New York - Troubled video game publisher Atari announced on Friday that it will lay off about 20% of its 400 employees, as part of a restructuring aimed at cutting costs in the wake of an unexpectedly weak quarter. The company said in its quarterly earnings statement last week that there was "substantial doubt" about its ability to continue operating as a company, after posting an unexpected loss due to weak sales of its games. "Today's decisive action will provide us with the flexibility necessary in a changing business environment," said Atari chairman and CEO Bruno Bonnell. "Adjusting our cost structure is a significant first step and demonstrates our commitment to restoring shareholder value."
