it has laid off 80 employees, and will shift away from short-form and daily
in-house production to "proven 30-60 minute formats from a multitude of
sources, including acquisitions, co-productions, outside studios, as well as

in a statement that the layoffs did not result from a need to cut costs, as the
company "will have its most profitable year," but are about
"re-allocating resources in order to put further emphasis on areas of the

San Francisco -- Former vice president Al Gore has announced that his re-named Current.tv youth-oriented digital TV network will launch on Aug. 1. Formerly INdTV, the 24-hour Current.tv network will offer short-form video content, produced both professionally and by viewers, on both the Internet and in 19 million homes subscribing to DirecTV satellite and Time Warner cable TV services. "The Internet opened a floodgate for young people whose passions are finally being heard, but TV hasn't followed suit," said Gore. "We intend to change that with Current, giving those who crave the empowerment of the Web the same opportunity for expression on television." Current.tv will offer video segments between 15 seconds and five minutes in length, on topics ranging from politics and the environment to technology, entertainment and relationships. Washington, D.C. -- Vivendi Universal Entertainment announced that it has sold its cable news channel, Newsworld International, to an investment group led by former Vice President Al Gore. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Newsworld currently is produced by the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. and accessible by about 17 million North American households. The TV network will be renamed IndTV and target an audience in the 18-35 age group. Gore will serve as chairman of the board and reportedly plans to devote most of his time to the network. Joel Hyatt, an entrepreneur and former finance chairman for the Democratic National Committee, will serve as the network's CEO.
