Motorola, Verizon to Sell Droid Smartphone for $199

Libertyville, Ill. - Motorola (NYSE: MOT)and mobile network partner Verizon (NYSE: VZ) on Wednesday introduced the Droid, a new Google (NASD: GOOG) Android-powered smartphone that will run on Verizon's 3G network. The touch-screen device features a 5-megapixel camera, Bluetooth, GPS and Wi-Fi, and will sell for $199 with a two-year contract when it goes on sale Nov. 6. The Droid will also be the first smartphone capable of running Google Maps Navigation, the company's new turn-by-turn navigation application.

Verizon to Sell Two Google Android Smartphones This Year

Basking Ridge, N.J. - Verizon Wireless (NYSE: VZ) announced on Tuesday that it plans to begin selling to smartphones based on Google's (NASD: GOOG) Android operating system this year. The company will offer two Android smartphones yet this year, both of which are expected to support the Google Voice application that has yet to receive approval for use on Apple's iPhone. The Android platform currently boasts over 10,000 applications, compared with 85,000 for the iPhone.

Report: Smartphone Users to Download 7 Billion Apps by 2013

Boston - With the number of smartphone users expected to quadruple by 2013, research firm Yankee Group on Tuesday predicted that users of the devices will download 7 billion apps costing $4.2 billion by that year.

Spotify Debuts iPhone, Android Mobile Apps in Europe

London - Spotify, an ad-supported music streaming service, has launched its mobile applications for Apple's (NASD: AAPL) iPhone App Store and the Android Market for customers in the U.K., Sweden, France, Spain, Norway and Finland. The mobile application is only available to subscribers to the company's premium, ad-free version, which costs about $16.40 per month in the U.K. Spotify is also preparing to launch its music streaming service in the U.S.

FCC Probing Apple's Rejection of Google Voice iPhone App

Washington - The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is investigating why Apple rejected the Google Voice application from its App Store for the iPhone, as well as what role if any carrier partner AT&T had in the decision. In letters sent to Apple (NASD: AAPL), AT&T (NYSE: T) and Google (NASD: GOOG), the FCC has also asked which third-party applications that supported Google Voice were additionally removed from the store by Apple.

Schaumberg, Ill. - Motorola (NYSE: MOT) plans to offer two new Google (NASD: GOOG) Android-based smartphones in time for the holiday shopping season, ZDNet reports. "We also have plans for more devices in the first quarter of 2010," Motorola co-CEO Sanjay Jha said on a conference call with analysts. Motorola currently claims about 5.5% of the global mobile phone handset market.

Mountain View, Calif. - Google (NASD: GOOG) has made its Google Voice service available to owners of BlackBerry (NASD: RIMM) and Android-powered smartphones, CNET News.com reported. The service offers a single telephone number to ring at a user's home, work and mobile phones. Google Voice can also transcribe voice mail messages and send them as text messages. Google Voice senior product manager Vincent Paquet told CNET that Google is also currently working on a version of the service for Apple's iPhone

London - Smartphone maker HTC on Wednesday introduced its third handset model to run on Google's (NASD: GOOG) Android operating system, the HTC Hero, which will sport a customized user interface. Pricing was not provided for the device, which will first launch in Europe in July, and then in Asia later in the summer followed by a North American version slated for release later this year.

New York - CBS-owned (NYSE: CBS) social music discovery service Last.fm announced on Friday that it has launched a music streaming application for Google's Android mobile phone operating system. Features include similar artist listings and genre-specific streaming radio stations, personalized streaming radio, updated concert information and the ability to track listening habits to a Last.fm profile. The company already offers an iPhone application in Apple's App Store.

San Francisco - Music-focused social network Imeem on Monday announced the launch of a mobile advertising platform for Android, Google's (NASD: GOOG) mobile device operating system. The company said Kia Motors has signed on as the first brand advertiser to use the platform. Imeem also launched a new version of its music streaming and recommendation application for Android.

Los Angeles - A number of social media services on Tuesday announced the release of applications designed for Android, the mobile phone operating system developed by Google, including social music service Imeem, music identification service Shazam, and the MySpace (NYSE: NWS) social network. Both Imeem and Shazam said their mobile music services will allow users to tag songs they hear for purchase via the Amazon MP3 store. The MySpace application for Android also integrates Shazam, meaning that MySpace Mobile users on Android-powered phones can hold them up to speakers and have the song being played identified automatically.

New York - Mobile network operator T-Mobile USA on Tuesday introduced the G1, the first mobile phone to feature Google's Android operating system, which will sell for $179 with a two-year voice and data agreement when it goes on sale first in the U.S. on Oct. 22. Viewed as a smartphone that will challenge Apple's iPhone, the G1 -- manufactured by Taiwan's HTC -- features both a touch-screen display and a full QWERTY hardware keyboard that slides out from underneath.
