APBuzz Watch: Brangelina Twins and The Evolution of Online VideoAuthored by Jay Baage on July 13, 2008 - 9:06am.
Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, the most famous couple in Hollywood, welcomed twins to the world on Saturday evening at a hospital in France. For some gossip magazines (and web sites), it's the biggest story of the year. Brangelina will be selling the first pictures of the twins for at least $11 million dollars, according to reports, which they will donate to charity. As I was searching the web this morning to see video clips of the story, I turned to the big television networks' websites to see what I could find. I was surprised to see how little there was out there and what I could find, for example on BBC News (my nr. 1 source of general news), was not embeddable (although it was made available on BBC's YouTube channel with the embed option turned off). http://www.cnportfolio.com/ Google, Associated Press Reach Licensing Agreement for Online NewsAuthored by Mark Hefflinger on August 4, 2006 - 12:31pm.
San Francisco - Google and news organization the Associated Press confirmed this week that they reached a licensing agreement several months ago that allows Google to publish AP news stories on its Web services. Google had already been providing links to AP stories published by newspaper partners through its Google News service; the new agreement goes further, although neither company provided many details to reporters. "It's a licensing agreement that lets us use original AP content in new ways than we have used in the past for Google News," Google spokeswoman Sonya Boralv told Reuters. Financial terms of the licensing agreement were also not disclosed. A lawsuit filed last year by Agence France Presse (AFP) accuses Google of copyright infringement for its lifting of AFP images, headlines and news story snippets for indexing on Google News. Google has maintained that Google News makes "fair use" of AFP and other news organizations' copyright content; the case is due to come before the U.S. District Court in D.C.

AP: Judge to Order Google to Turn Over Portion of Internet RecordsAuthored by Mark Hefflinger on March 14, 2006 - 10:56am.
Mountain View, Calif. - A federal judge on Tuesday said that he will order Google to turn over a portion of its Internet records subpoenaed by the Justice Department as part of the Bush administration's effort to revive a law intended to restrict minors' access to online pornography. The Associated Press reported that U.S. District Judge James Ware plans to order Google to turn over some of the requested records -- including a random list of web sites indexed by the company -- but expressed reservations about requiring the company to divulge actual requests entered into its search engine. Ware said that he was "particularly concerned" about creating the perception of Internet search engines turning into tools of surveillance for the government. The Justice Department is asking to see a random sampling of one million searches conducted on Google over a one-week period as part of its effort to revive the 1998 Child Online Protection Act (COPA), designed to protect minors from sexually explicit material.
AP: Sexual Predators in Conn. Used MySpace.com to Find Teenage VictimsAuthored by Mark Hefflinger on February 3, 2006 - 6:28am.
Hartford, Conn. - The Associated Press reported on Friday that police in Middletown, Conn. are investigating as many as seven allegations of sexual assault where predators met their alleged underage victims through the MySpace.com social networking service. The teenage girls, ages 12 to 16, say they were fondled by or had consensual sex with men they met on MySpace, who turned out to be older than they claimed on the site. Los Angeles-based MySpace, which stipulates that its users must be at least 14 years old, said in a statement that it is "committed to providing a safe environment for its users."
