According to the publication Twice, retailers briefed by Microsoft say that you will have to connect the device to a PC to purchase songs.

Seattle - The Seattle Times reported on Tuesday that Microsoft intends to release a line of Xbox-branded digital media products -- including a media player application and online media retail service -- in addition to a device designed to compete with Apple's iPod.
