Las Vegas - Recording artist Brandy has signed a deal to provide her voice and likeness to a video game produced by Los Angeles-based Matty/Markus Games, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Set for release in the first quarter of 2007, the as-yet-untitled game will feature an in-game soundtrack and separate CD soundtrack developed by Brandy. "An original soundtrack from artists that we build games around will be part of our release model at Matty/Markus Games," Matty/Markus founder Matty Rich told THR. The company is also collaborating with hip-hop artist the Game on a racing title for Sony's PSP handheld, slated to launch in the fall.

San Francisco - The Independent Online Distribution Alliance (IODA), a provider of digital distribution for independent music, announced on Wednesday that it has partnered with SoundExchange to become the first such distributor to offer integrated royalty payments to independent labels. Under the deal, IODA will distribute future and past royalty payments from SoundExchange to its roster of more than 1,000 labels. SoundExchange collects and distributes royalties for songs played on webcasts, satellite radio, and cable and satellite TV. "SoundExchange provides a tremendous service to rightsholders by making sure they are fairly compensated for digital performances," said IODA founder and CEO Kevin Arnold. "Many smaller labels have essentially been leaving this money on the table by not registering with SoundExchange. By integrating SoundExchange's payments, IODA is pleased to be able to offer our label partners the ability to quickly and easily monitor all of their digital earnings in one central location."

Las Vegas - Gracenote, a provider of CD and digital song identification services, announced on Thursday that it has signed a multi-year agreement with Muze, a provider of informational databases on music, movies, books and games, to integrate the two companies' services. The combined Gracenote and Muze offering will bring up Muze's album art, album reviews and artist biographies when users search CD song titles using Gracenote's database of over 4 million CDs and 55 million tracks. The companies said the combined service can be used in consumer electronics, mobile devices, PCs and automotive entertainment devices. Berkeley, Calif.-based Gracenote said its MusicID service was used by 150 million consumers in 2005, through applications including Apple's iTunes; Muze data is utilized in music retail kiosks and digital cable radio services.

Minneapolis - Consumer electronics and media retail store chain Best Buy announced on Tuesday that it has partnered with CD Baby, an online retailer of independent music, to offer CD Baby's library of 100,000 albums from 75,000 artists for sale through its BestBuy.com online store. "Best Buy selling deep catalog directly from independent musicians like this is the beginning of a 'long tail' revolution," said CD Baby founder Derek Sivers. "This will highlight the most amazing musicians in all genres of music, that are bypassing the record labels to sell directly from musician to fan." Oregon-based CD Baby's online store will be featured on the front page of the music section of BestBuy.com.

Portland, Ore. -- Umpqua Bank, a large community bank in the Pacific Northwest, on Wednesday announced the launch of a promotion for new accountholders, who will be able to browse a catalog of tracks from local Portland artists and create their own custom 10-song mix CD. Umpqua partnered with Portland-based licensing company Rumblefish to provide tracks for its Discover Local Music program, which will be offered in the fall at select stores in Oregon, Washington and California, as well as from UmpquaMusic.com. "The Discover Local Music program is a way for Umpqua Bank to showcase and support local artists while interacting with customers and the community on an entirely new level," said Umpqua Bank CEO Ray Davis.
