New York - Digital music service eMusic said on Thursday that it has added nine new publishers to its MP3 audiobook store, which it says is now selling nearly 13,000 titles per month. Joining the store are Simon & Schuster Audio, BBC Audiobooks UK, Reagent Press, Hay House, L.A. Theatre Works, Tantor Media, Phoenix Books, Listen and Live, Brainsync and Audio Evolution. Cleveland, Ohio - OverDrive, a distributor of digital books to online retailers, libraries and schools, announced on Tuesday that it has added DRM-free audiobook titles in the MP3 format to its offering. New York - Publisher Random House, a unit of Germany's Bertelsmann, has decided to forego digital rights management on its audiobooks and will begin selling them in the unprotected MP3 format, The Wall Street Journal reported. New York - Digital music service eMusic announced on Wednesday that it now counts over 350,000 paid subscribers to its service, which offers over 3 million tracks from 25,000 labels. New York - Digital music retailer eMusic, the second-largest seller behind Apple's iTunes, announced on Monday that it has added over 1,000 downloadable audiobook titles in MP3 format to its catalog. Audiobooks from publishers including Blackstone Audio, Hachette, Naxos Audiobooks, Penguin and Random House will be available by subscription, for $9.99 per month for one book or $19.99 for two books. While the audiobook files will be delivered as MP3s, they will include watermarks for tracking where they end up. Some publishers are viewing the addition of their titles as a test. Arlington Heights, Ill. - Digital download marketplace Blish.com announced on Wednesday that it has signed an agreement to distribute a library of over 5,000 audiobooks from MediaBay on its service. Founded in February, Illinois-based Blish.com also offers stock photography, royalty free music, legal documents, software, online courses, stock video and motion graphics from providers including Random House, RiverDeep Software and Princeton University Press.

Stratford, Conn. - Audio Evolution on Monday announced the launch of its independent audiobook publishing label. The label's first three titles are currently available for download from retailer Audible.com, including "The Botany of Desire: A Plants' Eye-View of the World" and "None Dare Call It Stolen: Ohio, the Election and America's Servile Press."

Los Angeles - The Los Angeles Times recently reported on a growing number of volunteers who are making recordings of public domain books that be downloaded for free on the Internet. The amateur readers often do not offer the nuanced performances of some publishers' audiobooks, which can cost up to $50. But a group called LibriVox has compiled a library of 15 free amateur audiobooks, of works including "Treasure Island," "Notes From the Underground" and "A Christmas Carol."

Wayne, N.J. -- Audiobook publisher Audible on Tuesday announced the formation of an international joint venture with publisher Verlagsgruppe Random House and Holtzbrinck Networxs to create a German-language version of its online audiobook store. Audible.de is expected to launch in the fourth quarter of 2004 and will consist of a German language site featuring German audio content as well as Audible's English-language content for download. New Jersey-based Audible also announced on Tuesday that it partnered with C-SPAN to offer free audio downloads of keynote speeches from the 2004 Republican National Convention.
