Philips Releases Watermarking Plug-in for Avid Editing Systems

Los Angeles - Electronics maker Philips on Thursday introduced a plug-in for digital media editing equipment maker Avid's products, that allow producers to add Philips digital watermarks to film, video, audio, animation and games content. Such watermarks can be used to track usage and help deter piracy.

Avid, Electronic Arts Team on 3D Game Development Software

Tewksbury, Mass. - Video editing technology firm Avid announced on Monday that its Softimage subsidiary is building 3D game development software in close collaboration with Electronic Arts' Chicago studio. "The demand for High Definition (HD) games for next-generation game consoles that play on today's plasma and LCD widescreen monitors makes 3D game development a much more complex process," Avid said in a press release. EA's Chicago studio, which developed "Fight Night" and "Def Jam: Icon," will use Softimage's XSI software to design high-end characters for an upcoming next-generation title.

Avid Acquires Music Software Developer Sibelius for $23 Million

Tewksbury, Mass. - Avid Technology, a manufacturer of digital video editing equipment and software, has acquired Sibelius Software, a London-based provider of music software, for $23 million. Sibelius' products are for professionals, educators and students who want to use computers to write, teach or learn music. The company will operate as a business unit of Avid's audio division.

Avid to Acquire Digital Audio Firm M-Audio for $80 Million

Tewksbury, Mass. -- Avid Technology, a major provider of video production technology, has agreed to pay $80 million in cash and 2 million shares of common stock to acquire Irwindale, Calif.-based M-Audio, a provider of digital audio and MIDI technology for electronic musicians and audio professionals. The deal also includes earn-out provisions, based on M-Audio's future financial performance. Founded in 1988, M-Audio has about 200 employees in the U.S. and Europe who develop products for the professional and consumer audio markets. "With this acquisition, we're bolstering our investment in the home studio market segment, the fastest growing portion of our audio business, where we achieved roughly 40% year-over-year growth in Q2 of 2004," said David Krall, CEO of Avid.

Avid Acquires Digital Asset Management Firm NXN for $44 Million

Tewksbury, Mass. -- Avid Technologies, a provider of professional video and audio editing equipment, announced on Monday that it has acquired NXN Software, a German provider of digital asset management software for the entertainment and computer graphics industries, for about $44 million. Companies including Sony Pictures Imageworks, China Central Television and Electronic Arts currently use NXN's alienbrain software to manage a range of differing digital files -- such as 3D models, textures, video, audio, source code and office documents. "Alienbrain systems will enhance the asset and production management features of Avid's content creation tools, making it easy for customers to track, store, and control virtually every version and type of file in a digital project," said Avid president and CEO David Krall.

Avid Gets $6.7 Million Digital Upgrade Contract With NBC

Tewksbury, Mass. -- Avid Technologies, a manufacturer of professional video editing equipment, announced a new $6.7 million contract with NBC, to replace several of the network's tape-based news production systems with its digital newsroom systems. NBC will begin the deployment of Massachusetts-based Avid's systems at its NBC News headquarters in New York, its MSNBC news operations center in New Jersey, and NBC Washington bureau.
