New York - Scholastic, publisher of the Harry Potter series in the U.S., on Thursday announced a sweepstakes leading up to the paperback release of "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince." The grand prize includes a 30GB Harry Potter iPod, which comes etched with the crest of the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and filled with audiobook versions of all six Harry Potter novels.

San Francisco - Publisher Ziff Davis' Media Game Group on Thursday announced winners of its third annual 1UP Awards, which honor the top video games of the past year as chosen by readers of its gaming publications, which include Electronic Gaming Monthly, Computer Gaming World, Official U.S. PlayStation Magazine, and 1UP.com. Capcom's "Resident Evil 4" was named Game of the Year, while Nintendo's "Nintendogs" was named the Most Innovative Game of 2005. Other winners included ArenaNet's "Guild Wars" for Best Massively Multiplayer Game; EA's "Battlefield 2" for Best Online/Multiplayer Game; and EA's "Madden NFL 06" for Best Sports Game.

London - Microsoft has been awarded a patent on technology that pauses a television show while viewers follow embedded links to relevant websites, chat rooms or other content, The Register reported. The company originally filed for the interactive TV "pause patent" in 1993. "Hyper-links to Internet sport pages or chat rooms can be included and the information displayed in a split screen along with the game, or the viewing of the game can be paused at the viewer's discretion for any length of time. Even with these arbitrary pauses the present invention(s) permits the viewer to watch the entire game, no matter when and how many viewing pauses are taken," reads the patent application.
