Showtime, Brightcove to Offer Emmy Voters Online Screeners

Los Angeles - CBS's (NYSE: CBS) Showtime Networks pay-TV unit announced on Thursday that it has partnered with Internet TV distributor Brightcove, on an eco-friendly plan to offer Primetime Emmy Awards voters the option to watch full seasons of its original series online, instead of receiving the usual bulky DVD mailings.

Call for Entries Issued for Interactive TV Primetime Emmy Awards

North Hollywood, Calif. - The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences' Interactive Media Peer Group on Wednesday announced a call for entries in the category of 2006-2007 Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Creative Achievement in Interactive Television. To qualify, an interactive TV program, series or service for primetime TV programming must have been commercially deployed between June 1, 2006 and May 31, 2007. Last year's winners were the TiVo service and ABC.com's full episode streaming feature. Entries for this year's awards must be received by May 31.

Arlington, Va. - Washingtonpost.com said on Tuesday that its coverage of Hurricane Katrina has won the first national Emmy award for original video journalism created specifically for new media. Senior videojournalist Travis Fox, producer of the Katrina series, accepted the award at a ceremony on Monday in New York. Other nominees included Web documentaries produced by nytimes.com, mtv.com and nationalgeographic.com.

Arlington, Va. - The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) and National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences said that the 2007 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) will feature the first annual Technology & Engineering Emmy Awards. The awards will honor achievements in broadcast, cable and satellite distribution, as well as advanced media technology, which includes interactive TV, gaming technology, the Internet, cell phones and personal media players. The event will open CES, the world's largest consumer technology tradeshow, which takes place in Las Vegas on Jan. 8-11.

The LA Times has aggregated the specific episodes that will be voted on in the comedy and drama categories of this year's Emmy Awards. In the prevailing spirit of the Internet, one can view clips of the nominees on YouTube, even before the judges receive the videos by mail. If I had just one vote to cast, an easy and enthusiastic choice would be for Jeremy Piven, in recognition of his infectiously entertaining portrayal of Hollywood power agent, Ari Gold, in HBO's comedy-series Entourage.

TV Academy Names First Emmy Nominees in Broadband/Cell Phone Category

Los Angeles - The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences on Monday announced the nominees for Emmy Awards in a new category called "original entertainment programming created specifically for nontraditional viewing platforms," namely the Internet and cell phones. After reviewing 74 submissions, the Academy nominated Fox Mobile Entertainment's mobisode show "24: Conspiracy"; Ozone Inc.'s "It's JerryTime!" animated blog; AOL's coverage of the "Live 8" concerts; MTV Networks' "mtvU Stand In" broadband show; CB Films' "Sophie Chase"; and "Stranger Adventures," an online puzzle contest from Riddle Productions. The winner will be announced during the Daytime Emmy Awards ceremony in New York on April 22.
