Citizen Journalism Site Backfence to Shut Down

New York - After closing its 13 "hyperlocal" citizen journalism news sites in D.C., Chicago and the Bay Area late last month, Backfence has announced that it will shut down, citing "business issues," the Associated Press reported.

Vienna, VA - BackFence CEO and co-founder Susan DeFife has resigned from the company, amidst a major downsizing that saw 12 of 18 employees let go. Co-founder Mark Potts will serve as interim CEO as the company looks to solve what he calls “BackFence 2.0.”

Backfence Launching Local News Sites for Chicago Suburbs

Vienna, Va. - Backfence, a company building a network of community websites on which readers contribute the content, said that it has launched a new site in Evanston, Ill. -- the company's first site outside of D.C. and San Francisco. Backfence, which raised $3 million in funding last October, also said that it plans to add sites in Chicago suburbs before the end of the year. The company's sites provide localized news coverage of communities, as well as event listings, reviews and ratings of local businesses and free classifieds.

has joined Backfence, a nationwide network of community newssites, as its Vice President of Marketing. Patchin was previously the Vice President of Advertising for the social-networking pioneer Tribe.net.

Vienna, Va. - Two months after acquiring San Francisco's Bayosphere, Backfence, a Virginia-based company building a network of community websites on which readers contribute the content, said on Thursday that it has formally launched its first site in the San Francisco Bay Area.
