Washington - Julius Genachowski late Thursday was unanimously confirmed by the Senate as the new chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), three months after his nomination by President Obama. Genachowski, a former classmate of Obama's at Harvard Law School, served as a top technology advisor during the campaign.

Washington - JibJab, the California-based creator of political parity cartoon videos, on Saturday premiered its first satire of the Obama administration at the 65th Annual Radio and Television Correspondents Dinner, with the President, himself, in attendance. The 2-minute musical video, entitled "He's Barack Obama," portrays Obama as a super hero battling challenges such as the economy, foreign policy and pirates -- all to a heavy metal rendition of "When Johnny Comes Marching Home." In a departure from its banjo-centric musicals of the Bush era, the company recruited musicians from bands such as the Foo Fighters and Jane's Addiction to take part in the project, which can be viewed at the link below.

Washington - Despite calls from over 20 interest groups last week that he "diversify" his intellectual property-related appointment to the Justice Department, President Barack Obama has appointed former Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) attorney Ian Gershenorn as deputy assistant attorney of the DOJ's Civil Division, Wired.com reported. Gershengorn was a partner at Jenner & Block, which represented the labels in their landmark case against the Grokster file-sharing service -- and represents the fifth RIAA lawyer to be appointed to DOJ by Obama.

Washington - A coalition of public interest groups has written to President Obama, calling on him to "diversify" future appointments to intellectual property policy positions, after Obama named several former attorneys from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) to top positions within the Justice Department. Washington - In what the White House is calling a "new experiment," President Obama on Thursday morning will answer questions submitted from the public during a special "online town hall meeting" about the economy, to be streamed on WhiteHouse.gov. Visitors to the site can now set up an account and submit their questions, as well as vote on others, as part of a newly launched program called "Open for Questions."

Washington - The Obama administration's Justice Department has weighed in on the side of the major record labels in a federal lawsuit where an accused music file-swapper has argued that current law providing for $150,000 in damages per copyright violation is "punitive," CNET News.com reported. Harvard law professor Charles Neeson and his students are arguing in the case of Joel Tenenbaum -- a student accused of sharing music on file-sharing networks -- that current copyright law provides for damages so excessive that they violate due process rights, and are therefore unconstitutional.
