Report: Holiday E-Commerce Sales Finally Match Last Year

Reston, Va. - Following a slow start to the online holiday shopping season, strong sales on both Black Friday and Cyber Monday have bumped e-commerce spending for the first 35 days of the season back up to last year's levels, according to new figures from market research firm comScore.

Reston, Va. - Online bargain-hunters were expected to flood the Internet on Monday in search of deals on "Cyber Monday," the unofficial kickoff of the online holiday shopping season. According to comScore, the online holiday shopping season already is off to a strong start, with sales on Black Friday up 1% from a year ago. Combining Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday, online sales rose 2%, the firm said.

New York - About 27.7 million U.S. Internet users visited retail web sites on "Cyber" Monday, eclipsing the traffic those sites saw on the previous "Black" Friday by 15%, according to new figures released by Nielsen/NetRatings. "'Cyber Monday' brought a surge of traffic to many online retailers as shoppers returned to work following the holiday weekend ready to tackle their holiday gift lists," said Heather Dougherty, a senior retail analyst for Nielsen/NetRatings. The firm said that shoppers were enticed to the sites by steep discounts on merchandise and free shipping offers. The top five online shopping destinations on Monday included eBay, Amazon, Wal-Mart, Target and Overstock.com.

New York - Web traffic to online retailers on Black Friday -- the traditional start of the holiday shopping season -- shot up 29% from a year ago, according to new figures from Internet research firm Nielsen/NetRatings. The firm said that its 100 representative online retailers brought in 17.2 million unique visitors, up from 13.3 million a year ago. "While many shoppers headed out to the stores over the weekend, the majority first turned to the Internet to check prices and product availability," said Heather Dougherty, a senior retail analyst with Nielsen/NetRatings. EBay was the top online retailer, with 9.5 million unique visitors, followed by Amazon and Wal-Mart Stores, which drew 4.6 million and 3.4 million unique visitors, respectively. Target and BestBuy.com rounded out the top five. Target, Wal-Mart and Circuit City, which offered deep discounts on selected items on Friday, saw traffic to their sites more than double from the previous Friday.

New York -- Online shopping on the day after Thanksgiving, traditionally known as "Black Friday," jumped 11% from the year before in terms of unique shoppers, according to data released on Monday by Nielsen/NetRatings, a provider of Internet audience measurement services. Tracking activity at 109 key retail and shopping sites, the firm said that 13.3 million people visited online stores during the day. The firm credited shoppers researching products and prices before heading out to the mall. eBay led the top online shopping destinations with 5.4 million unique visitors, followed by Amazon (2.6 million), Wal-Mart (1.4 million), Target (923,000) and BestBuy.com (847,000).
