NBA Releases Live Mobile Video Streaming Application

Los Angeles - The National Basketball Association (NBA) has released a new live mobile video application, for platforms including Apple's (NASD: AAPL) iPhone and the Google (NASD: GOOG) Android Marketplace, which will cost $40 per year.

RIM to Release Touchscreen BlackBerry Storm2 Smartphone

Toronto - Research in Motion (NASD: RIMM) plans to release an updated version of its touch-screen Storm smartphone, Reuters reports. The Storm2 will continue to sport a "clickable" touch-screen, but add faster typing and "multitouch" functionality, RIM co-CEO Jim Balsillie told Reuters. Vodafone plans to begin selling the device in the fall in parts of Europe and South Africa, while Verizon is also expected to offer the device this year.

Digital Music Store 7digital Debuts in U.S. with 77-Cent Songs

Los Angeles - Digital music retailer 7digital on Tuesday announced its launch in the U.S., which will offer a library of over six million MP3s, priced at $7.77 for albums and 77 cents for individual songs. London-based 7digital has operated online stores in the U.K. and other parts of Europe since 2004.

Vonage Launches Mobile Applications for iPhone, BlackBerry

Holmdel, N.J. - Internet telephony firm Vonage (NYSE: VG) on Monday announced the release of mobile applications for Apple's (NASD: AAPL) iPhone and RIM's (NASD: RIMM) BlackBerry. The free applications let users make low-cost international calls either over a Wi-Fi connection, or on the same voice network used to make regular calls. "We're not trying to drive voice traffic over the data network at this point," Michael Tempora, SCP of products at Vonage, told The Times. "Though we do look forward to the wireless networks in the U.S. opening up so we can launch voice and messaging apps over 3G and 4G networks." A similar application from Google, Google Voice, has not yet been approved for the iPhone by Apple.

Report: Smartphone Users to Download 7 Billion Apps by 2013

Boston - With the number of smartphone users expected to quadruple by 2013, research firm Yankee Group on Tuesday predicted that users of the devices will download 7 billion apps costing $4.2 billion by that year.

Wall Street Journal to Charge for iPhone, Blackberry Access

New York - News Corporation (NYSE: NWS) plans to begin charging users for mobile access to The Wall Street Journal on Blackberry (NASD: RIMM) and iPhone (NASD: AAPL) smartphones, CEO and chairman Rupert Murdoch said at an event today, PaidContent reported. The move is expected to come in a few months. Hulu, the online video joint venture between News Corp., NBC Universal and Disney, is also expected to introduce a pay-per-view or subscription model.

Sunnyvale, Calif. - Yahoo (NASD: YHOO) has introduced three new mobile applications, which are variously available for Apple's (NASD: AAPL) iPhone and RIM's (NASD: RIMM) BlackBerry. Flickr for Mobile, available only for iPhone and iPod touch, is a free application that lets users upload and tag photos and videos. The company also released Yahoo Fantasy Football for Mobile, and a Yahoo Finance for Mobile application available for the iPhone and BlackBerry Bold, Tour and 8900 series.

Report: GPS Smartphone Shipments Climb 34% to 77 Million

Boston - Worldwide shipments of smartphones equipped with GPS will grow 34% this year, from 57 million in 2008 to 77 million in 2009, according to a report from market research firm Strategy Analytics.

New York - Time Warner's (NYSE: TWX) Sports Illustrated magazine on Wednesday launched a $2.99 application for Apple's (NASD: AAPL) iPhone -- coming soon for RIM's (NASD: RIMM) BlackBerry -- that gives users access to hundreds of photos from the magazine's annual swimsuit issue. The SI Swimsuit 2009 application, created by Azuki Systesms, also provides sports scores, schedules and team information, and lets users create sports calendars to track teams with customized swimsuit model photos for each month.

Verizon Cuts BlackBerry Storm Price to $99 to Match iPhone

New York - Verizon (NYSE: VZ) is discounting the price of Research in Motion's (NASD: RIMM) touch-screen BlackBerry Storm smartphone to $99, in a bid to compete with the AT&T iPhone 3G, InformationWeek reported. The Storm went on sale last November with a price tag of $200, and has since sold over 1 million units.

Mountain View, Calif. - Google (NASD: GOOG) has made its Google Voice service available to owners of BlackBerry (NASD: RIMM) and Android-powered smartphones, CNET News.com reported. The service offers a single telephone number to ring at a user's home, work and mobile phones. Google Voice can also transcribe voice mail messages and send them as text messages. Google Voice senior product manager Vincent Paquet told CNET that Google is also currently working on a version of the service for Apple's iPhone

A teaser video for the album alludes to social networking features, news and tour coverage in addition to the ability to hear the album on BlackBerry handsets.

Las Vegas - QuickPlay Media, a provider of mobile video distribution, has announced plans to launch a service that will deliver full episodes of TV shows to RIM's (NASD: RIMM) BlackBerry smartphones. Set to launch in early May via the BlackBerry App World store, the $7.99 per month PrimeTime2Go service has already line up NBC, MTV Networks, CBS and The CW as content partners. Content will download in the background over a Wi-Fi network.

New York - Skype, the Internet telephone service unit of eBay (NASD: EBAY), plans to launch an application that make its service available to users of Apple's (NASD: AAPL) iPhone tomorrow at a mobile industry trade show, and another in May that will enable its service for RIM's (NASD: RIMM) BlackBerry, Reuters reported. "The No. 1 request we get from customers is to make Skype available on iPhone. There's a pent-up demand," Skype COO Scott Durchslag told Reuters.

Report: RIM Planning TV Episode Service for BlackBerry

Los Angeles - RIM (NASD: RIMM) is planning to introduce a TV episode service for its BlackBerry smartphones, and may make the announcement at next week's CTIA wireless industry event, NewTeeVee reported, citing multiple anonymous sources. The sources said the service already has multiple content partners lined up, and for a monthly fee will offer unlimited access to TV shows downloaded in the background over a Wi-Fi connection.

Chatham, N.J. - Fictionwise, the e-book retailer recently acquired by Barns & Noble, on Tuesday released the beta version of a free application that lets users read its titles on BlackBerry smartphones. The Fictionwise eReader application also works for Apple's iPhone, as well as devices based on Palm, Windows Mobile, PocketPC and Symbian mobile platforms.
