Buzz Watch: Gordon Gekko Returns in “Wall Street” SequelAuthored by Scott Goldberg on May 9, 2007 - 9:57am.
The man famous for the line “Greed is good” in the 1987 Oliver Stone film “Wall Street” is set to reappear in a sequel titled “Money Never Sleeps.” No release date has been announced, though the film’s script will be completed later in the year. Michael Douglas will play the role of Gordon Gekko once again, but Bud Fox (Charlie Sheen), the protégé who put him in prison, will not reappear. Early reports indicate that Stone will not direct the sequel, though Edward Pressman, producer of the first movie, supposedly courted him to do so for months. The script will be written by Stephen Schiff, who also wrote “True Crime.” With the Dow now comfortably above 13,000 and major M&A rumors swirling daily, could there be a better time for Gordon Gekko to enlighten us on his prison-born wisdom?
Buzz Watch: The Manic Street Preachers and Nina PerssonAuthored by Jay Baage on April 2, 2007 - 10:06pm.
Swedish pop sensation The Cardigans frontwoman Nina Persson sings guest vocals on the brand new Manic Street Preachers single "Your love alone is not enough". Someone said that it sounds like "a bad Bond song", but most people that commented on this YouTube video said that it is painfully catchy and a great come-back for the Manics - Nina is just icing on the cake. I don't think it's as good as some of their old stuff, but I still can't wait for their fortcoming new album "Send Away The Tigers".
Buzz Watch: Xbox 360 Elite on Deck, says TakahashiAuthored by Scott Goldberg on March 25, 2007 - 9:10pm.
San Jose, CA – Dean Takahashi, known for his inside scoop on the games industry in general, and the Xbox specifically, wrote Saturday that Microsoft will launch a new Xbox 360, rumored to be called the “Elite.” Takahashi said rumors of the new console have been confirmed by his sources. Microsoft has made no official announcement.
Obama & Clinton Cozy Up in (YouTube’s) BedAuthored by Scott Goldberg on March 21, 2007 - 6:12pm.
Who knew the 2008 election would be so sexy, so early? Don’t you just love it? Unofficial polls say people are tired (or bored) of Iraq. Not sure what that means, but there you have it…the American people want something fresh. They demand it. And what better way to give it to them than with some hot, steamy internet video banter? Does anyone doubt the relevance of that fast food treat called “YouTube” now? I didn’t think so! It’s here to stay, people, accept it.

Buzz Watch: Sumner Redstone Wants to Be Friends with Tom Cruise AgainAuthored by Jay Baage on March 2, 2007 - 2:35pm.
Viacom Chairman Sumner Redstone wants to be friends with Tom Cruise again and says that he never fired him from Paramount to People Magazine: "What happened was, I just gave an interview to the Wall Street Journal. In the course of it, they asked me what was going on. I said, you know, he would no longer be in the lot. They treated that like I was firing him. I didn't fire him! I had nothing to do with it. But they treated it explosively. And I didn't like it."
Buzz Watch: Lonelygirl15 Teams Up With Lindsay Lohan in Film ProjectAuthored by Jay Baage on February 21, 2007 - 3:42pm.
One of the first Internet video stars, Jessica Lee Rose also known as LonelyGirl15, is breaking into Hollywood. Well, she has been on numerous magazine covers already and got an agent at CAA, but this is her first role in a traditional movie - I Know Who Killed Me - opposite Lindsay Lohan. So is the Internet the new breeding ground for Hollywood stars or is it just another person cashing in on her 15 minutes of fame? I guess we have to stay tuned. By the way, don't miss our upcoming creators roundtable at the Future of Film Conference in Beverly Hills on March 21, 2007, moderated by Steven Starr, CEO, Revver and featuring Ask a Ninja, Sam Has 7 Friends and Cory Tyler of Can We Do That?
Buzz Watch: Apple Games for the iPhone, AppleTV, Courtesy of EA, NamcoAuthored by Scott Goldberg on February 16, 2007 - 11:41am.
It was only a matter of time, wasn’t it? Steve Jobs knows the playing field better than anyone, and the writing has been on the wall for quite some time. Early reports indicate that Apple will partner with Electronic Arts (EA) and Namco to create casual games exclusive to the iPhone and AppleTV. No official announcement has been made.
Buzz Watch: The Backlash to the Media Coverage of Anna Nicole Smith’s DeathAuthored by Jay Baage on February 13, 2007 - 8:01am.
From the death of John F. Kennedy to the Challenger explosion to 9/11, many of the greatest moments in journalists’ careers came after unexpected tragic events. However, while we might have expected things like Ryan Seacrest’s first ever breaking news bulletin after the death of Anna Nicole Smith (interrupting a re-run of “The Simple Life” on E! to bring viewers the heartbreaking news), it was more surprising that reputed news outlets like CNN devoted hours and hours to push the story, as this website noted in a spoof. However, the decision to let the Anna Nicole story take precedence over “hard news” was not without internal friction. The following clip of CNN’s Jack Cafferty is priceless and should earn him some kind of award for keeping Integrity on air:
Buzz Watch: VBS.TVAuthored by Jay Baage on February 12, 2007 - 1:01pm.
VBS is a new cool online broadcast network for hipsters from the people behind Vice Magazine. It is organized in the right way for the Web 2.0 universe - original content, free of charge and 24 hours a day, produced with watching on the computer in mind (short and interaction-friendly). VBS has an interesting mix of domestic and international news, pop and underground culture coverage and music. What else can be expected when they have Academy Award-nominated director Spike Jonze (Adaptation, Being John Malkovich) as creative director? My personal favorite is Thumbs Up with Korean American ex-criminal genius artist David Choe. This kind of niche content has trouble finding its way to the big broadcast networks, but should have no problem finding an audience on the net. I’m already addicted.
Buzz Watch: GetAFirstLife.com Gets Huge Traffic Boost for Second Life ParodyAuthored by Scott Goldberg on February 2, 2007 - 12:27pm.
The website GetaFirstLife.com is listed on Alexa right now under its “Movers & Shakers” list for its huge growth in traffic. The site launched in the middle of January and received an immediate traffic surge for its spoof on the virtual social networking world Second Life. Most striking about Get a First Life is how realistically the website portrays Second Life’s in design. It even features a ticker with the number of “residents” on its site, listing it at 6,553,628,382, roughly the current world population.

Buzz Watch: Teadybears and Iggy PopAuthored by Jay Baage on February 1, 2007 - 2:08pm.
Of course as a Swede I'm biased on this, but there is a lot of damn good music coming out of Sweden right now. For example, Swedish singer/songwriter José Gonzalez just received a ”Border Breaker” award at MIDEM, for his debut album ”Veneer” (he had a great live gig with Nic Harcourt at Morning Becomes Eclectic on KCRW a few months ago). Perhaps even more exciting is that Peter, Bjorn and John's excellent album "Writers block" will finally get a proper US release on February 6 (they are playing at Roxy's in LA tonight). They played live in New York this past weekend and got fantastic reviews in the New York Times. Moreover, the Teddybears have released their U.S. debut, Soft Machine, on Big Beat Recordings. The album, a mash up of styles touching on garage punk beats, Electro, Dancehall and Krautrock, features a diverse array of guest vocalists, including Iggy Pop and Neneh Cherry. Take a look at their cool new video:
Buzz Watch: Donald Trump Gets a Star on the Walk of FameAuthored by Jay Baage on January 16, 2007 - 11:13am.
Donald Trump's star was unveiled Tuesday on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. No doubt that Donald Trump, producer and host of NBC reality show "The Apprentice," is famous. But does the real estate billionaire belong in the company of Hollywood's 2327 biggest film, music and television stars? He certainly thinks so himself. Except for perhaps Paris Hilton, is there anyone who does a better job of promoting himself/herself in the media right now? The whole feud between Trump and Rosie O'Donnell is just another example of how "The Donald" manages to keep himself in the spotlight. Congrats on the star Donald! I'm sure we'll see much more of you in the coming years.
Buzz Watch: Soccer Star David Beckham Recruited To Los Angeles Galaxy!Authored by Jay Baage on January 11, 2007 - 3:36pm.
David Beckham, the most recognized soccer player on the planet - also a fashion icon, tabloid fixture and all over marketing giant - announced a deal on Thursday to play for the Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League Soccer. For a 5-year contract reportedly worth $250 million, Beckham is expected to do for American soccer what the Beatles once did for pop music or Survivor did for Reality TV. I believe the US is ready to finally adopt the world’s biggest sport and Beckman might very well be the catalyst, so this is a very interesting development.

AllofMP3 Plans to Stay Open in 2007, Lower Prices Over New Year'sAuthored by Jay Baage on December 29, 2006 - 10:43pm.
The controversial Russian low-price online music store AllofMP3.com plans to stay open. Mediaservices, the company behind AllofMP3.com, claims that current US lawsuits are not of any particular concern to the company and offers users a 20% price cut over New Years: “Certainly the (record) labels are free to file any suit they wish, despite knowing full well that AllofMP3.com operates legally in Russia”, blogs an unnamed senior representative of the company on their site.
Buzz Watch: Bret Easton Ellis Writes Showtime DramaAuthored by Jay Baage on December 11, 2006 - 7:07am.
This looks promising - "The Canyons" - a script from Bret Easton Ellis, who wrote the pop-culture classic "American Psycho" novel, has been picked up by premium cable channel Showtime. In the wake of HBOs many hit shows like "The Sopranos" and "Six Feet Under", Showtime has a lot of catching up to do. While "Weeds" is an under-appreciated gem, "The L Word" is groundbreaking and "Sleeper Cell" is simply great, Showtime has flown under the radar and not managed a big break-out pop-culture hit. Maybe "The Canyons" will be it. The show will reportedly be part soap opera, part horror flick, following a 29-year-old magazine editor who travels across the country following his best friend, only to find himself alone when his friend dies mysteriously. Let's hope that it is not too over-the-top like the latest Showtime addition, "Dexter", which, unfortunately, in my opinion did not deliver on a promising premise.
Buzz Watch: NY Magazine's Popular Approval Matrix Goes InteractiveAuthored by Jay Baage on December 7, 2006 - 12:27pm.
New York Magazine has a really cool new interactive feature on its already, in my taste, excellent website. It's the magazine's popular Approval Matrix, in an interactive format! Basically, you get to place current events in the matrix yourself and after you are done, you can see where others have placed them. Check it out here.

Buzz Watch: Has Second Life Created Its First Real Life Millionaire from Virtual Real Estate?Authored by Jay Baage on December 1, 2006 - 11:49am.
Real estate and development magnate Anshe Chung held a press conference in Second Life on Tuesday to discuss her claim that she is the first to have amassed US$1 million worth of assets in Second Life. She is walking a fine line in making that claim, since Second Life residents don’t take lightly to people making false Second Life claims in order to gain PR in the real world. Earlier this month, Dreamland (Second Life’s largest residential project) residents voted to ban public relations firms that made false claims.
