Mark Cuban: My Olympics 2016 Business and Technology Predictions

Authored by Mark Cuban on August 26, 2008 - 8:00am.

If you havent read, ESPN has come out and said that they will be aggressively bidding for the retransmission rights for the next available Olympics, which will be in 2016. Notice I didnt say TV rights. The battle for the Olympics rights will be in spreadsheet projections done by ESPN, NBC and probably DirecTV (my guess, not based on any info), that will have to take in to account what revenues can be generated on TV advertising (traditional and interactive), through cable/satellite subscription revenues, an ever increasing market size for mobile video and advertising, and of course audio/video and text advertising of all types.

Mark Cuban: How to Make US Broadband Competitive

Authored by Mark Cuban on April 10, 2008 - 8:10am.

There is a dirty little secret in the cable industry. Its being kept secret not by the cable distributors, but by the big cable networks. End this practice and the United States goes from being 3rd world by international broadband standards, to top of the charts and exemplary. Make this change and Net Neutrality becomes a non issue. There is plenty of bandwidth for everyone. What is the dirty little secret? That your cable company still delivers basic cable networks in analog.

Broadband Capacity - The Alternative Minimum Tax Of The Web?

Authored by Scott Karp on January 18, 2008 - 11:37am.

Think video is the future of online media? Broadband revolution, right? Apple perfecting the digital video experience? Well, not if everyone decides to embrace that future all at once. Time Warner Cable is experimenting with caps on broadband usage, which means too much movie downloading and suddenly you’re paying $30 per movie.

Mark Cuban: What Counts as a Commercial Worth Paying For, Online and Offline?

Authored by Mark Cuban on June 3, 2007 - 5:19pm.
Nielsens release of commercial data has led to quite a bit of discussion in the advertising industry about what counts as a commercial worth paying for. Is a commercial only worth paying for when its viewed live, during its run in a broadcast ? Should a commercial only be worth paying for if its viewed within 3 days of its broadcast ? Are there viewings of commercials from a DVR that are not worth paying for, or should the price be different dependent on when its viewed ?

Mark Cuban: Donald - Need a Job?

Authored by Mark Cuban on May 22, 2007 - 8:07am.
What in the world is Donald Trump going to do now? He "quit" The Apprentice after a 3 year run. His casinos once again are having troubles. He is at real risk of transitioning from THE Donald to, "you remember, THAT Donald". I actually feel sorry for the guy. Seriously, what could his future hold ? We live in a culture where celebrity out of the limelight is celebrity quickly forgotten. Its a peril for those whose only skill is being a celebrity and I'm sad to say, I think Donald Trump has fallen from businessperson who goes back to work as some of us are, into the category of celebrity without a TV show.

Analysis: The VA Tech Tragedy and the Death of TV Network News

Authored by Rohit Bhargava on April 20, 2007 - 9:30am.

Here's a fact: if you get naked and run across the football field at an NFL game, you won't get on television.  The World Cup and most international soccer leagues have also instituted the same policy.  If a streaker makes it onto the field, the television cameras cut away from the action and the commentators simply fill time and the action will continue once he or she is removed.  The thinking is, if you remove the incentive of getting fame by being on television, streakers will stop disrupting games.

Mark Cuban: Would I Have Fired Don Imus? Hell No.

Authored by Mark Cuban on April 13, 2007 - 9:15am.
Don Imus got fired. Dumb insensitive comments. Not only was his firing the end of his show and employment, it was a tombstone for independent thinking in mainstream media. When ABC fired Bill Maher and cancelled his show Politically Incorrect, for his agreeing with a guests' comments about terrorists it was merely a warning shot.

Thoughts on TelcoTV 2006: Complete Solutions vs. Best-of-Breed Solutions

Authored by colin_dixon on November 16, 2006 - 7:03am.
At last week's TelcoTV conference in Dallas, I had the opportunity to speak with a variety of vendors whose technologies enable the delivery of TV services over telecom networks. Many had exciting new features pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the delivery of digital TV services. But amongst all the customer wins and service updates, I sensed a familiar theme echoing through my conversations with the smaller, independent vendors: how can we compete with the 'Big Guys' – the vertically-integrated 'complete solution' vendors?
