Canadian Court Overturns Copying Levy on MP3 Players

Toronto - The Canadian Federal Court of Appeal last week overturned a decision that would have extended the levies the country adds to the cost of blank discs -- to cover potential losses from media copying -- to digital audio recorders. The Canadian Private Copying Collective (CPCC), which collects and distributes the blank disc tariffs to artists, had sought the expansion of the levy to include MP3 players and similar devices.

Artists Collect Over $100 Million From Canada's Private Copying Levies

Toronto, Canada - The Canadian Private Copying Collective (CPCC), an entity created in 1999 to collect and distribute tariffs on sales of blank media sold in Canada, announced on Monday that it has distributed over $100 million to more than 88,000 music rights holders over the past four years. Canadians pay levies when they purchase certain recordable media, including a 21-cent tax on blank CDs, to account for what the CPCC says are losses due to piracy.

Toronto - The Canadian Private Copying Collective (CPCC), a group made up of record labels, music publishers and others in the industry, last week reintroduced a proposal that would add a tax on iPods and other music players that can record media.
