Analysis: The Value of Copying DVDs

Authored by Paul Sweeting on April 6, 2009 - 12:01pm.

The National Consumers League is out with the results of a new study conducted by Opinion Research showing that 90% of consumers believe they should be able to back up their DVDs to a hard drive or copy them to a portable device, and they'd be willing to pay about $61 for a piece of software that helped them back up their collections. Sounds like a good business opportunity for someone like a RealNetworks...oh wait.

Guest Column: MIDEM 2009 - Setting Music Free

Authored by Hal Bringman on January 22, 2009 - 12:54pm.

As Digital Media Wire readers ready themselves for the highly anticipated Digital Music Forum East, here’s an overview of the annual MIDEM music conference that just concluded in Cannes, France. The annual music industry happening, MIDEM, is a must attend event for global players in the music business.  This year’s MIDEM attendees were welcomed by moody skies over Cannes, which were symbolic of the state of the industry overall.  Along La Croisette, rain pelted delegates darting from the Palais de Festivals to the deal making hubs of the Majestic and Carlton hotel bars.

Analysis: 3D Entertainment the Next Big Thing at CES 2009

Authored by Jay Baage on January 9, 2009 - 11:17am.
Las Vegas – What is the next big thing at CES 2009? To me, the answer is clear: 3D Entertainment. Disney and Dreamworks have made commitments to produce movies in 3D and sneak peaks of the coming Dreamworks Animation 3D movie Monsters vs. Aliens look amazing, both on the big screen during Sony’s keynote yesterday and on HDTV in Intel’s booth. Mark Cuban even called 3D movies "The LSD of 2009" during a CES interview. And 3D is making its way into video games as well. I played Guitar Hero in 3D thanks to NVIDIA’s 3D Vision kit, which combines high-tech wireless glasses, a high-power IR emitter and advanced software to create a stereoscopic 3D experience for hundreds of existing PC games.

Howard Stringer: The Seven Habits of Highly Effective CE Companies

Authored by Paul Sweeting on January 8, 2009 - 8:36am.
LAS VEGAS--The most compelling thing on display at Sony chairman Sir Howard Stringer's CES keynote this morning was a short clip from the upcoming Disney/Pixar movie "Up." Why was the chairman of Sony plugging a Disney picture? Because Sir Howard was borrowing Disney chief creative officer and Pixar founder John Lasseter to shill for Blu-ray, and where there's a quid there must be a quo. The fact that Sony is still dragging Hollywood luminaries up on stage to defend promote Blu-ray tells you all you need to know about where Sony really thinks about how the Blu-ray revolution is coming along (you WON for chrissakes). "Never have I been as excited by a technology as I am with Blu-ray," Lasseter enthused. "Once you have it, you can’t go back."

Analysis: Cisco-Vision To Be Revealed at CES

Authored by Paul Sweeting on December 30, 2008 - 2:18am.
After talking the talk for several years (and spending the dough), Cisco Systems will take its first step toward walking the consumer-electronics walk next month when it unveils a new wireless home stereo system at CES designed for streaming high-quality audio around the house. The most interesting bit of news in the New York Times report, however, may be the other home networking ideas Cisco is kicking around.

Buzz Watch: Wired's Top 10 Technology Breakthroughs of 2008

Authored by Jay Baage on December 26, 2008 - 7:01am.

Wired magazine just announced their picks for top 10 technology breakthroughs of 2008, a list which includes lots of cool stuff like flexible displays and Michael Phelps high-tech Speedos. However, their top two picks can be seen as somewhat controversial: #1. Apple's App Store and #2. Google’s Android. While Apple’s App Store certainly is an improved environment for third party developers (as compared to anything the traditional mobile operators currently offer), it still represents a “walled garden” school of thought. Google’s free, open source smartphone operating system is designed to work best with Google’s web-based email, contacts and calendar programs. While both products represent steps in the right direction, it can be argued that their two top picks are designed to benefit their creators more than the consumers…

DMW Vlog: TiVo’s Mark Risis Predicts Cell Phones Will Replace Remote Controls

Authored by Jay Baage on December 5, 2008 - 11:47am.

New York - One of the most interesting interviews I did at DMW's recent Future of Television Forum East turned out to be with Mark Risis, Director, Interactive Advertising Sales for TiVo. In the interview embedded above, Risis talks about new creative ways in which the folks at TiVo are working to deliver advertising. He also predicts that there will be a lot of innovation around the design and usage of the remote control, including the possibility of cell phones replacing remote controls for the TV. Also, don't miss video from the panel he was on (embedded below) entitled "The Future of Television Advertising: What's Next?"

How Flip Video Is Using Personalization To Stand Out

Authored by Rohit Bhargava on December 3, 2008 - 7:44am.

Imb_flipvideocustom I've been a fan of the iconic Flip camera for some time now. In my own experience, the device has single handedly unlocked the immediate power of creating video for me because it has made it a simple process. It has always been a great product. But now there are other products that offer similar features. Their groundbreaking idea of a compact video camera with popup USB connection is no longer the differentiator it once was. To take it's place, they've done something very smart with their most recent product, the Flip Mino (and Mino HD).
