In August, the company abandoned its original plan for a game console, and said instead it is working on a service that will deliver games digitally over the Internet.

Accessories factored into the report include portable speakers, docking stations, cables, chargers, cases and wireless transmitters. The firm predicts hikes in export prices 2006 will help fuel an 85% rise in production value in mainland China, to $33 million, while Taiwan will see about $71 million. "At least 50 new suppliers are ready to begin production this year in Taiwan and mainland China alone," said Global Sources' Mark Saunderson. "Production costs are increasing due to compliance with the European restriction of hazardous substances directive and high energy costs," Saunderson added. "Many manufacturers expect to increase export prices by about 10 percent in the months ahead."

"Yes, the electrical connection has specifications around that and licensing around that, and the way you get that assistance and information and licensing is through the 'Made for iPod' program," Apple senior vice president Phil Schiller told News.com. A source familiar with the "Made for iPod" licensing scheme told News.com that Apple is now seeking a mandatory royalty, on the order of 10% of a device's wholesale price. In return for the sizable cut of their revenues on iPod accessories, Apple told manufacturers it will ensure future iPods continue to support their products through a universal docking connection.

Port Washington, N.Y. -- Total U.S. sales of accessories for console and portable video games in 2003 were flat over the previous year with $1.2 billion in sales, while the first quarter of 2004 has seen a 10% sales increase over the same period last year, according to data from New York-based market research firm NPD Group. Products included in the video game accessories category include specialty controllers, modems and DVD remotes. NPD noted that the greatest increase in dollar sales occurred among network adaptors and modems -- devices that connect game consoles to the Internet for online gaming -- which rose 155% in 2003. "Online gaming provides consumers with the ability to experience entirely new ways of playing video games, while the industry continues to see increased revenues through this alternative to off-line gaming," said NPD senior analyst Richard Ow.

Los Angeles -- Over 1,300 new computer and video games and related products will be introduced at this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), the industry's largest annual video game convention scheduled to take place May 14-16 in Los Angeles. Of the new video games to be unveiled, exhibitors at the event told its organizers that 57.3 percent will be for video game consoles; 26.7 percent will be for PC; 8.6 percent will be for handheld game devices; 4.7 percent will be for PDAs, wireless phones and other; and 2.6 percent will be online/Internet games.
