Tokyo - Japan's Matsushita (Panasonic) and Sony on Thursday announced that they have jointly developed a new HD digital video camera recorder format that captures images onto 8cm DVD discs. The AVCHD format uses the MPEG-4/H.264 codec to compress video recorded in 1080i or 720p high-definition signals. The two companies have started preparations for licensing the new format throughout the industry.

Toronto - GestureTek announced on Wednesday that it will provide the gesture-based control technology used in the Xbox Live Vision camera, a new accessory for Microsoft's Xbox 360 video game console. Similar to the EyeToy USB camera accessory for Sony's PlayStation 2, the Xbox Live Vision camera will allow players to insert their own images into gameplay and control the action via movements of their arms, legs and bodies captured by the camera.

East Aurora, N.Y. - Toymaker Fisher-Price on Wednesday announced details on the release of its MP3 player and digital camera designed for preschoolers. The Kid-Tough FP3 Player features an expandable SD memory card slot and will begin selling in July for $69, while the company's Kid-Tough Digital Camera will feature 8MB of built-in memory -- enough to hold 60 pictures -- and will sell for $69 when released in June.

Redwood City, Calif. -- Ampex Corporation, a developer of audio and video storage media, announced on Monday that it has filed a complaint with the International Trade Commission, alleging that Sony is infringing on its patented digital still camera storage technology. Ampex also filed a federal suit in U.S. District Court in Delaware for patent infringement that seeks unspecified damages. The company said it has been in active licensing negotiations with Sony and other firms, including Sanyo, which it has also sued for patent infringement.

Norwell, Mass. -- Over 25% of all cell phones sold in 2004 will be camera phones, as unit sales reach 150 million this year, according to projections from Massachusetts-based market research firm InfoTrends Research Group. Camera phone sales are expected to reach 656 million units in 2008. The firm reports that Japan accounted for half of the world's camera phone sales in 2003. "Growth in the camera phone market creates new opportunities for many industry players, including handset vendors, wireless carriers, and digital photofinishers," said InfoTrends senior research analyst Jill Aldort. InfoTrends noted that rapid adoption of camera phones worldwide will generate an additional 29 billion digital images captured this year.

Rochester, N.Y. -- In a sure sign that digital photography is eroding market share from its traditional film-based counterpart, photography equipment giant Eastman Kodak has announced that it will cease selling film-based cameras in the U.S., Canada and Western Europe by the end of the year. The company said it will still manufacture and sell film cameras in more lucrative emerging markets such as China, India, Eastern Europe and Latin America.

Ramat Gan, Israel -- TransChip, a developer of single microchip camera solutions for mobile phones and other multimedia-enabled devices, announced on Wednesday that it has raised $5.5 million in its third round of venture capital financing. Mission Ventures led the investment round; Cadence Inc., and previous TransChip investors Ray Stata and Dr. Andrew Viterbi also participated. The company points out that 20 million camera handsets were sold in 2002, and market reports that indicate that by the end of 2003, nearly 50 percent of all phones in production will be camera-equipped. The new funding will support Israel-based TransChip's product development, marketing and sales initiatives.
