Toshiba HD Set-top to Feature PlayStation 3 "Cell" Processor

Las Vegas - Consumer electronics firm Toshiba plans to introduce a TV set-top box that will be able to record up to six HD channels at the same time, as well as raise their apparent resolution, the Associated Press reported. The set-top, which will be powered by the same Cell processor used in Sony's PlayStation 3, will be sold along with a flat-panel LCD TV later this year in Japan for between $5,000 and $10,000, Scott Ramirez, VP of marketing for Toshiba America Consumer Products, told AP.

Foster City, Calif. - Sony Computer Entertainment America on Thursday cut $100 off the price of its 80GB PlayStation 3 in the U.S., which will now sell for $499, and also said it will begin selling the new 40GB model for $399, beginning Nov. 2.

Newport Beach, Calif. - Sony has been sued for patent infringement by Newport Beach, Calif.-based Parallel Processing Corporation, which claims the Cell processor that powers the company's PlayStation 3 video game console infringes its 1991 patent.

Foster City, Calif. - Sony Computer Entertainment America announced on Tuesday that it will offer its next software update for the PlayStation 3 on March 22, which will add features including Folding@home, a project that will allow Stanford University to utilize participating PS3 owners' computing power for medical research.

Tokyo - Sony plans to significantly reduce spending on the Cell processors that power its PlayStation 3 video game console, and may begin outsourcing all production, a senior executive said on Tuesday, Reuters reported.

New York - Scribner, author Stephen King's book publisher, said on Wednesday that it has hired mobile marketing firm Flytxt to promote King's upcoming book, "Cell." Consumers who sign up for the mobile Stephen King VIP Club via text message will receive access to mobile content such as King ringtones, wallpapers and a monologue podcast from the author.

Tokyo -- Sony announced on Tuesday that it plans to sell a networked broadband television in 2006 that will utilize the same "Cell" processor currently in development for use in the next generation of its PlayStation video game console, Reuters reported, citing an interview in Japan's Nihon Keizai Shimbun. Sony said the Cell processor, which will be up to ten times more powerful than standard chips, will begin a test production in early 2005. Sony has committed $4.4 billion through 2007 to develop the Cell, along with partners IBM and Toshiba.
